What is this research about and why is it important?

American Indians and Alaska Natives have a higher rate of long-term diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, than most other races/ethnicities. Many of these diseases can be prevented, managed, or treated with the help of specialists (doctors who focus on a specific area of medicine). However, many American Indians and Alaska Natives do not receive specialty care. The purpose of this study is to learn why.

On the Catori study, we want to follow the journey of patients with first-time referrals to oncologists (cancer doctors), neurologists (brain and spine doctors), and/or ophthalmologists (eye doctors). We are looking to see if Native patients see the doctor they were referred to, and if not, we want to understand why.
